Though almost all branches of Christianity would claim to sail through the portals of heaven on a ship named GRACE, there is wide divergence of opinion on just what that means. One's understanding of justification, regeneration, sanctification, repentance, faith, and other subjects further refine the meaning of GRACE held by different factions within Christianity. This text book presents GRACE as absolutely free, not in the sense of being cheap or easy, but in the sense of a free gift (Eph 29) with no strings attached on either the front end or the back end of receiving this gift. The author believes this understanding of GRACE is a corollary of dispensationalism. Presented as an alternative to either Arminianism or Calvinism, this mediating position claims that God's so great salvation is absolutely free. Dave Anderson graduated from Rice University in 1967. He received his Th.M. from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1972 and his Ph.D. in the Greek New Testament and Early Christian Literature in 1998, also from Dallas Seminary. He served with his wife Betty as church planters in the Houston area for over thirty years. Along the way he has been an adjunct professor for Dallas Seminary, teaching in three areas Greek NT, Systematic Theology, and Bible Exposition. Currently he is President of Grace School of Theology and professor of biblical languages and systematic theology.

This book is more of the same easy-believism mess that Ryrie and Hodges wrote about 20+ years ago. The only difference is this sounds more intellectual than the argumentation from 20+ year ago. And just like the books from Hodges and Ryrie, it will soon be an UN-relavant book, with truth for only those who want it and will not have any true place in the literature of future historic Biblical Christianity.

Furthermore, it is obvious that throughout the book, a theology is driving the text and not the text driving theology. How sad!

For those who support the view in this book, I am sure you will love the content and be angry at anyone who would speak against it (like me). All of you need to read "The Gospel According to Jesus."

For those who understand the Bible and the gospel as the Bible speaks of it, will not be swayed, but will find this reading to be most helpful on why they do not believe what is espoused within. I certainly found it helpful in strengthening what I believe the Bible truly says (which is not found in this particular book).

So, I give a 1-star because the argumentation is terrible and not Biblical (as it was years ago).

Strong recommendation to avoid this book!
In my opinion, Dr. Dave Anderson has done a superb job of relating to the historical origins of Calvinism and Arminianism and showing the exegetical problems of interpreting the Scripture from a Calvinist or Arminianist position rather than a biblical position. A much needed book of balance showing how Dortian Calvinism both back loads and front loads the Gospel by adding works to faith rather than holding to what Scripture says---faith alone in Christ alone. Anderson shows that Free Grace is based on a sound grammatical historical interpretation of God's Word.
Dr. Anderson breaks down Free Grace Soteriology (the study of salvation) into an easy to understand format. Any person who holds to the Free Grace position MUST read this book. Wondering what it means to be "Free Grace", read this book. The section on the "Hermeneutical Circle and James 214-26" is worth the price alone. Well done Dr. Anderson!
Dave Anderson brings his considerable background to bear is clarifying the doctrine of salvation. His understanding of systematic theology, Biblical theology, and historical theology combine to clarify many Scriptural passages that are often interpreted through the lens of an accepted system of theology. Bible students, pastors, anyone seeking to harmonize the breadth of Bible passages dealing with salvation. Great stuff!
The author has produced an excellent work in explaining and defending the 'Free Grace salvtion' position for his readers in a detailed and comprehensive manner and yet easy for the layperson to understand. I find myself returning to this book time and again as an incredibly useful source for personal study and small group Bible teaching.Free Grace Soteriology
The conservative Christian world revolves around two divergent points of view Calvinism and Arminianism, which both formed in the "second generation" after the Reformation, and within the context of the counter-Reformation, and even, to some degree, the Enlightenment. In the recent past, however, a new movement has sprung on the scene --Free Grace-- which also claims a lineage back through Christian history. What is the difference between these three? David R. Anderson sets out to compare the three, and defend the Free Grace view of salvation --called soteriology-- in this book.

Dr. Anderson begins his writing with an examination of soteriology itself. What is it, and why is it important to the Christian life? The primary argument he makes here is that your view of soteriology strongly impacts the way in which you live your Christian life. What is the definition of a "spiritual life?" How should a Christian go about living a life that is faithful to God? The next chapter tackles the sinfulness of man, focusing on the concept and meaning of total depravity. Are men unable to respond to the call of God? Are men able to respond in a way that pleases God? Is faith a work?

The third chapter discusses salvation in the Tanach, a pressing question for Dispensationalists especially. If there are dispensations, then how were believers saved in the times before Christ? Has the content of faith changed? Does this mean there is more than one way of salvation? In the next chapter, the author works through the Cross of Christ. What is the nature of salvation? Dr. Anderson argues for penal substitution, although he recognizes the value of other views.

The following chapters cover salvation from other angles, including the concept of justification, the order of salvation, the meaning of repentance, what faith means, eternal security, whether or not a believer can be assured of salvation, and regeneration.

The twelfth and thirteenth chapters takes the game to one side of this 500 year old debate, Lordship Salvation --which is a form of strict 5 point Calvinism. In this chapter Dr. Anderson discusses problems with the Lordship view. He spends a good deal of time discussing infant baptism, arguing that this practice is a natural outgrowth of Calvinistic theology.

The final chapter discusses the problem of divine sovereignty verses human free will.

"A suggested answer to this dilemma and to the controversies surrounding the decrees of God (supra, infra, etc.) may be in the ontology of God, the makeup of God. He is three, but also one. 'The Lord our God, the Lord is one." Because He is one, all His attributes are part of His indivisible essence. Thus both His election and His foreknowledge are one and coextensive. This may well be the meaning and implication of I Pet 1 2, which says "elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father." He has not chosen us based on His foreknowledge or in spite of His foreknowledge, but in accordance with His foreknowledge." (Page 293)

If you want to understand the concept of salvation from a Free Grace point of view, you couldn't do much better than this book. Dr. Anderson lays his points out well, and does a good job of arguing from the Scriptures ad original quotes the founders of these systems to prove his point. Of great interest is his view that Dispensationalism and Calvinism simply cannot mix --that the essential hermeneutical standards set by Calvinist, and the five point Calvinistic system, rule dispensationalism out of the mix. the author has included a very helpful appendix on this topic alone.

Recommended.
